EDPNA – Eligible for Direct Pay Non-Attorney Representative for Forbes 30 under 30 company
About Counter Fin
Counter Fin is a Newark-based social impact firm helping workers navigate disability and leave benefits so they don’t lose everything when work stops. We combine lived experience, technology, and human support to guide people through SSDI, TDI, FLI, and related claims. We are expanding our network of Social Security disability advocates and seeking experienced, mission‑driven EDPNAs to help more claimants successfully access benefits while leveraging our growing platform and referral ecosystem.
The Role
As an EDPNA (Eligible for Direct Pay Non‑Attorney), you will represent Social Security Disability claimants throughout the administrative process, helping them prepare strong cases, understand their rights, and present their stories clearly. You will work as an independent contractor with steady referrals from Counter Fin, plus the ability to bring and serve your own clients using our systems, content, and brand as a force multiplier.
What You’ll Do
• Represent clients in SSDI/SSI claims at the initial, reconsideration, and hearing levels.
• Review and analyze claim files, medical records, and prior decisions to assess case strength and strategy.
• Conduct detailed intake and case development interviews with clients and their families.
• Communicate with SSA, DDS, medical providers, and other third parties to gather and submit evidence.
• Draft forms, written arguments, pre‑hearing briefs, and post‑hearing summaries as appropriate.
• Prepare clients and witnesses for hearings and appear at hearings before Administrative Law Judges.
• Track deadlines, maintain accurate case notes, and ensure compliance with SSA rules, fee regulations, and ethical standards.
• Coordinate with Counter Fin staff on referrals, client education, and integration with other benefit supports, using our digital tools, content, and workflows with your clients as appropriate.
How You’re Paid
• You are compensated through authorized SSA fees paid from a portion of the claimant’s past‑due benefits, subject to SSA’s 25% cap and current maximum fee limits.
• As a 1099 independent contractor, you are responsible for your own taxes, insurance, and benefits.
• When Counter Fin refers the client to you, we use a standard referral and platform‑support split in which you retain the majority share of the authorized fee; when the client relationship originates with you, the split is reversed so you receive the larger share.
• Additional performance‑based bonuses or incentives may be available as part of our broader growth and impact goals and will be described in a separate independent contractor agreement.
• There is no salary or hourly wage; income is tied to approved fees on successfully resolved cases, consistent with SSA fee agreement and fee petition rules.
Who You Are
• Current EDPNA (Eligible for Direct Pay Non‑Attorney) in good standing with SSA, with all program requirements (exam, background check, liability insurance, and continuing education/ethics) up to date.
• Demonstrated experience handling SSDI/SSI claims, including hearings before Administrative Law Judges.
• Strong understanding of Social Security rules, regulations, and the disability evaluation process.
• Excellent written and verbal communicator, able to explain complex legal standards in plain, empathetic language.
• Highly organized, deadline‑driven, and comfortable managing a steady caseload with minimal supervision.
• Mission‑aligned with a commitment to disability justice, income security, and trauma‑informed, client‑centered advocacy.
